| Military programs have already embraced Commerical-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) electronics, processor boards and more recently, real-time operating systems. Traditionally the next layer in a system is the actual application software. The infrastructure for these applications are often common from system to system. COTS is coming here, too. A key infrastructure element in many systems is middleware. For distributed real-time systems there are now fairly complete networking standards from Object Management Group (OMG) including Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and the new Data Distribution Service (DDS) publish-subscribe standard. With standards come COTS implementations. We’ll discuss distributed system standards, especially the new DDS publish-subscribe standard, and describe applications that have successfully used COTS middleware. | |
