| The U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego (SSC San Diego) has been implementing the best practices of the Software Capability Maturity Model (SW-CMM) for a number of years. We are now transitioning to the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). The CMMI will affect many more projects across our organization. This has forced us to make a number of changes to meet this new challenge. Specifically, we are shifting from a software process focus to a project management focus. Instead of focusing on the CMMI, we have elected to focus on project management best practices. We are developing a Project Management (PM) Guide for all project managers to use as the standard work process for the organization. The PM Guide provides a list of activities that are to be performed by projects in the organization. The guide is aligned with the goals of the CMMI through Level 3, and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). Some of the challenges we face are, updating current software process assets to include systems engineering, and updating the training curriculum to include the activities in the PM Guide, as well as systems engineering, and the CMMI. | |
