Developing Useful Use Cases to Accelerate Analysis |

| We describe a method to accelerate software analysis by using a combination of event-response modeling and use case modeling. The method starts with creation of an event-response model that lists the events that may occur in the system’s environment and a brief description of the system’s response to each such event. A small number of these event responses are developed into full-blown use cases. The selection is driven primarily to mitigate risk (both technical and requirements related), although other factors such as safety and complexity also play significant roles. Essentially we accelerate analysis by eliminating the nonvalue added work in developing use cases for straightforward events. The method has been successfully applied in a large-scale software development effort called Reusable Air Defense Infrastructure Applied to Next Generation Technology (RADIANT) at Northrop-Grumman Corp., Navigation Systems Division in Woodland Hills, CA. | |
