A Simple and Effective Return on Investment (ROI) Approach for the Formal Inspection Process

Tuesday
Presentation

This presentation covers the successful deployment of formal inspections for a large multi-company, Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 3, software development project. The Return on Investment (ROI) from the inspection process is now (after four years of software development) more than twice the original investment. The key to success was simple: concentrate during software development on removing with inspections the defects that truly impact integration. In other words, instill a grass-roots "inspection culture" that takes pride in the number of important defects that are removed. Key to developing this culture was 1) a Statistical Process Control approach coupled with 2) an overarching goal to empower inspectors with the knowledge of what makes inspections worthwhile and the authority to control their use. This presentation includes the ROI calculation, inspection improvement trends, and the six inspection parameters used for Statistical Process Control.
