This briefing covers the use of the Observe, Orient, Decide, Act (OODA)
Loop as an implementation strategy for the Measurement & Analysis (MA)
process. Colonel John R. Boyd, both an accomplished U.S. Air Force
fighter pilot and military thinker, developed the OODA Loop as a winning
strategy for air combat. It is simple, elegant, and applicable to many
fields of endeavor.
Its use is particularly warranted for the MA process. Driving corrective actions with MA as required by the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) model can sometimes prove difficult. The OODA Loop provides a framework for action and a focus on integrating MA with other processes that successfully engages MA within a project’s corrective action loops. This presentation covers the OODA Loop concept as applied to MA, practical suggestions, and related lessons learned. These recommendations are based upon years of MA experience, recently with a CMMI Level 3 “Best Practice” MA process. |
