A significant issue facing project managers is
how to effectively and efficiently tailor their
Organization’s set of Standard Processes (OSP)
given the technological and organizational
complexity of both their programs and OSP. Early
in 2004 member companies engaged Systems and
Software Consortium, Inc. (SSCI) personnel on a
task to investigate and report on researching
the theoretical possibility of performing
process tailoring using pre-defined rules. They
requested that SSCI choose an
industry/government standard process description
to be used as a representative OSP. The Naval
Systems Engineering Guide was chosen.
Research activities moved from determining the
theoretical possibility of rules-based process
tailoring to determining the practicality of
automating rules-based process tailoring. It
was determined that not only was rules-based
process tailoring possible, but could be done in
an automated manner. Key results, lessons
learned, benefits and next-steps will be
presented.
