(I) Right Data, Right Warfighter, Right Time – Implications for Software and Systems

Ms. Patricia Oberndorf

One statement of the vision for future warfighting is β€œthe right data to the right warfighter at the right time.” As simple as it sounds, this statement has profound implications for systems and software that are expected to make it reality. To fulfill this vision, many engineering, organizational, and technology issues need to be resolved. Engineering issues include constant evolution, dynamic composition, and predicting emergent behavior.

Key organizational requirements include a shared global vision, understanding how constituents influence each other, processes, and legal and business frameworks. Underlying technologies required for Network Centric Warfare (NCW), such as Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) and Model Driven Architectures (MDA), are evolving. We must understand what can be accomplished today and the remaining research challenges.

This presentation will explore some of those issues, noting things we know how to do now and those we do not. It will propose appropriate research topics for those implications that need further work.
